“Selling” an Emotion

Our emotions provide information. As difficult and unpleasant as some emotions can be, they serve a purpose.

Finding that purpose can be just as challenging when it feels so uncomfortable and distressing.

So you are going to try and “sell” your emotions to yourself.

You are going to remind yourself of why each of your emotions is important and is there to help you.

With each emotion, think about what purpose that emotion holds. What is that emotion trying to tell you? What is that emotion trying to help you with?

Anger can be telling you that your values are being or have been compromised. Or that your boundaries have been breached or violated. It could be telling you that someone or something has wronged you. It could be trying to tell you that you need to do something. You need to move to action. What could your anger be telling you? Draw that. Sell that.

Sadness can be telling you that you have suffered a loss. It could be telling you that you are missing someone or something. It could be telling you to stop and take a moment to feel that loss. Or acknowledge that you are missing someone. What could your sadness be telling you? Draw that. Sell that.

Happiness can be telling you that a goal has been achieved. It could be telling you that something has been accomplished. It could be telling you to stop and enjoy the moment and activity you are currently doing. It could be reminding you to enjoy time spent with loved ones. It could be reminding you that you love expressing yourself with art or music. Draw that. Sell that.

Love can be telling you that you care about someone or something. It could be telling you to pay attention to what you care about. It could be telling you to cherish what you care about. Why does the feeling of love happen for you? What does it tell you? Draw that. Sell that.

  • On a piece of paper, one for each major emotion, draw an advertisement for the emotion
  • “Sell” the emotion. Why would someone need anger? Why would someone need grief? Why would someone need happiness? Why would someone need love?

If it helps, imagine you have encountered an alien from a planet that doesn’t have emotions. And this alien has come to earth and wants to be a human. But the alien will need emotions. And this alien has no idea what emotions are or what purpose they serve. How would explain and sell an emotion, any emotion – even the unpleasant ones, to an alien? Why would an alien want to have emotions?

Google ideas of what purposes emotions can serve.

Sit with an emotion and listen for what it might be telling you.
