Visual Journaling

Sometimes words don’t properly convey what we are feeling, and what is going on in our heads. Words just don’t seem to fit or work. Sometimes a colour or image works better. Enter visual journaling.

If you can, get a sketchbook for your visual journaling.

  • Focus on the current experience of self and the environment
  • Practice at one point during the day, what is happening in your life right now? What are you thinking and feeling in response to these events?
  • Create an artwork in response to the present moment, take a moment or two and draw an image that symbolically expresses the moment you are in, and then put it away
  • Later on, return to the image/creation, and observe, describe non-judgmentally write a reflective response to the imagery
